OTHER FAUST WORKS:[link]
These are my interpretations of Faust (right) and Mephistopheles (left) of the German story "Faust" (If you haven't heard of it, I have a brief description here: [link]
which is also the first page of a comic I've started based on it.) This scene is meant to capture the moment that Mephistopheles pledges his loyalty to Faust once he's signed his soul away to the Devil. The background is Faust's alchemical laboratory.
I put a lot into their character designs and I think they're probably my best, if not at least my most overworked...
I hit a pretty solid wall of "f*ck it" when it came to Mephistopheles design. I figured he's a devil and that's pretty manly, so I took that as license to pretty him up as much as I pleased.
I'd also like to add that he isn't wearing lipstick; his lips, nails, and the whites of his eyes are just naturally black. I was going to give him bat-like wings at first, but I decided to go with these stripped bone ones instead, which I think give him a nice presence. And, as for Faust, he is indeed douche-baggy enough to pull off a monocle. Also, he's a redhead.
His design fought me a little at first, but I like how it came out in the end. The setting is supposed to be a sort of anachronistic AU version of 17-18th century Germany, which is why the clothes make little to no sense.
This was actually a project for an art class, and I've been eager to post it for a while because I think it's the strongest piece in my portfolio. Moreover, it contains two full figures and a complete background which is a freaking miracle for me. It's pen and ink on 18" x 24" bristol. Sorry for all the rambling.
